Elche returned to La Liga this season after finishing second in the Segunda División, and the early stages of their 2025–26 campaign have been quietly impressive. Three wins, six draws and three defeats have earned Eder Sarabia’s side 15 points, placing them 11th in the table and only three points adrift of sixth-placed Espanyol.
However, Los Franjiverdes have struggled to turn performances into victories in recent weeks. They have not won a league match since late September, collecting just two points from their last five fixtures (three defeats, two draws). They headed into the November international break following a 1–1 home draw with Real Sociedad, and now face the daunting task of trying to defeat Real Madrid for the first time since 1978.
History is firmly against them: Real Madrid have won 35 of the 53 meetings between the sides in all competitions, including a comfortable 4–0 victory when they last met in the second half of the 2022–23 La Liga season.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, entered the break on a slightly frustrating note. A 0–0 draw with Rayo Vallecano came after a 1–0 Champions League defeat to Liverpool, but Los Blancos remain in a strong position domestically. Xabi Alonso’s team sit top of La Liga with 10 wins, one draw and one loss from 12 matches, giving them 31 points, three more than second-placed Barcelona.
Defensively, they have been outstanding—conceding just 10 goals, the joint-best record in the division. At the other end, Kylian Mbappé has been the league’s standout player, scoring 13 goals, six more than any other La Liga player so far.
Despite the strong results, it has not been entirely smooth behind the scenes. Questions have already been raised about Xabi Alonso’s long-term future, and Vinícius Júnior has also been at the centre of off-pitch unrest.
On the field, however, Real Madrid have been exceptional away from home, boasting the best away record in La Liga with 13 points from six matches. Elche, though, will take confidence from their own home form: they remain unbeaten at Estadio Martínez Valero, with three wins and three draws from six.
With Real Madrid aiming to extend their lead at the top and Elche determined to protect their unbeaten home run, this clash promises to be far more competitive than the historical record suggests.
