Tottenham’s midfield options have been reduced further by Africa Cup of Nations call-ups, with Pape Sarr and Yves Bissouma away representing Senegal and Mali respectively, although the latter was already sidelined due to injury and suspension.
In terms of fitness, Dominic Solanke (ankle), Dejan Kulusevski (knee), Destiny Udogie (thigh) and James Maddison (ACL) remain some way off returning. However, Radu Drăgușin (fitness) and Kota Takai (thigh) have featured in recent training-ground friendlies and appear to be edging closer to first-team contention.
Teenager Archie Gray was partly culpable for Nottingham Forest’s opening goal last weekend, but Rodrigo Bentancur also struggled to impress, which could open the door for João Palhinha and Lucas Bergvall to earn starting berths against the holders.
As previously noted, Mohamed Salah has departed for AFCON duty, a blow that would have been easier to absorb had his likely stand-in, Dominik Szoboszlai, not suffered an ankle issue against Brighton. The Hungarian may be fit enough to make the matchday squad but is unlikely to start.
Szoboszlai was one of two injury concerns for the Reds last weekend, alongside Joe Gomez, who picked up a muscle problem. Conor Bradley, however, returns from suspension and is available to cover in defence. Jeremie Frimpong is also back in contention following a two-month absence with a thigh injury, while Wataru Endo (ankle), Cody Gakpo (muscle) and Giovanni Leoni (ACL) remain ruled out.
