India vs Brazil: Match Preview
India will face one of the biggest challenges in their recent international schedule when they take on five-time world champions Brazil in a high-profile friendly on Saturday.
India head coach Khalid Jamil has found victories difficult to secure since taking charge last summer. His first 13 matches have produced two wins, five draws and five defeats.
Four of those games came during India's unsuccessful Asia Cup qualifying campaign, where the Blue Tigers recorded one win, one draw and two defeats. As a result, India will miss the tournament for the first time since 2015.
India have shown signs of improvement in their most recent fixtures, avoiding defeat in their last two matches. They drew 1-1 with Tajikistan in June before producing the same scoreline against Panama in Bangalore on Friday.
Ryan Williams gave India the lead in the first half against Panama, but Omar Valencia equalised in the 68th minute to ensure the friendly ended all square.
The Blue Tigers now face an even tougher assignment, with Brazil followed by another South American heavyweight, Uruguay, on Tuesday.
India sit 138th in the FIFA World Rankings and will need an outstanding performance to extend their unbeaten run to three matches against a Brazil side ranked among the world's top nations.
Brazil looking to build momentum
Brazil arrive in India looking to continue their preparations for the next stage of their international cycle under Carlo Ancelotti.
The Selecao suffered a disappointing last-16 exit at the 2026 World Cup. After negotiating their Round of 32 tie against Japan, Brazil were eliminated by Norway in a 2-1 defeat that also proved to be Neymar's final international appearance.
Brazil returned to action two months later with two friendlies against Australia.
Their first meeting ended in a dramatic 1-1 draw after Rayan scored a 95th-minute equaliser. Brazil then produced a much-improved performance in Brisbane, coming from behind to beat Australia 4-2.
Vanderson, Raphinha, Bruno Guimaraes and Vinicius Junior were all on the scoresheet in that victory.
Ancelotti has now recorded 11 wins from his first 19 matches as an international head coach, alongside four draws and four defeats.
Brazil have won seven of their last 10 matches and scored at least three goals in five of those victories. They will now face India for the first time, with the Selecao aiming to make a strong start to their visit.
Team News
India captain Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is expected to start in goal and could face a busy evening against Brazil's attack.
The goalkeeper is likely to be protected by a defensive line featuring Abhishek Singh, Bijoy Varghese, Anwar Ali and Akash Mishra.
Ryan Williams will be one of India's main attacking threats after scoring twice in his first three appearances for the national team.
Brazil will be without Roma's Wesley and Chelsea's Joao Pedro, with both players withdrawing from the original squad because of injuries.
Barcelona winger Raphinha has also left the squad after suffering a thigh problem during Tuesday's victory over Australia.
Ancelotti is expected to rotate his squad, potentially giving opportunities to Vitor Reis, Martinelli, Andrey Santos, Estevao and Endrick.
Match Outlook
India will be hoping to produce a disciplined defensive display and make the most of their opportunities against one of international football's most successful nations.
Brazil enter the match with greater attacking momentum following their 4-2 victory over Australia, but Ancelotti could rotate his starting XI as he continues to assess his squad.
The encounter will also be India's first-ever meeting with Brazil, adding further significance to an already high-profile international friendly.
