India vs Uruguay: Match Preview, Team News and What to Expect
India will be aiming to finish their international window on a positive note when they take on Uruguay in an eagerly anticipated international friendly. The fixture presents another major challenge for the Blue Tigers as they prepare for the 2026 SAFF Championship in November.
India enter the match without a win in their last six games. Their latest results include a 1-1 draw against Panama and a heavy 4-0 defeat to Brazil.
India Looking to Bounce Back
The Blue Tigers opened the international window with a 1-1 draw against Panama. Ryan Williams put India behind with the opening goal before Omar Valencia restored parity in the second half.
India then faced five-time world champions Brazil in a much tougher assignment. Estevao and Pedro scored during the opening half, while Samuel Lino added two more goals after the interval to complete a 4-0 victory.
The defeat extended India's winless streak to six matches. Their last victory came against Hong Kong, when they recorded a 2-1 success during their unsuccessful Asian Cup qualifying campaign.
India's recent attacking numbers remain a concern. The Blue Tigers have scored more than once in none of their last six matches, while they have conceded in each of their previous 13 international fixtures.
Facing Uruguay, a side considerably higher in the FIFA rankings, will therefore be another significant test for Khalid Jamil's team.
Uruguay Enter the Match With Confidence
Uruguay will arrive with renewed confidence after ending a lengthy winless run with a convincing victory over South Korea.
La Celeste experienced a disappointing World Cup campaign, collecting only two points from their three group-stage matches. Their second consecutive group-stage exit subsequently brought Marcelo Bielsa's tenure to an end.
Uruguayan legend Diego Forlan was then appointed as the new head coach. His first match in charge ended in a 3-1 defeat against Japan, extending Uruguay's winless streak to eight matches.
However, Uruguay responded strongly in their next outing, producing an impressive 4-1 victory over South Korea in Seoul.
Darwin Nunez was the standout performer, scoring twice, while Giorgian de Arrascaeta also got on the scoresheet. An own goal completed Uruguay's four-goal performance.
The result will have given Forlan and his players a much-needed confidence boost ahead of their meeting with India.
Team News
India captain and goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu is expected to return to the starting lineup. Prabhsukhan Singh Gill featured in the second half against Brazil but could move back to the bench.
Khalid Jamil has several options if he decides to make changes to the defence, with Jay Gupta and Valpuia among the players pushing for a starting position.
There could also be changes in attack, with Vikram Partap Singh and Mohammed Sanan potential options to provide additional energy in the final third.
Uruguay, meanwhile, will be without Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde, who is unavailable after suffering an ankle injury.
Forlan could rotate his squad after the victory over South Korea, with Santiago Mele, Jose Maria Gimenez, Santiago Mourino and Jan Manuel Sanabria among those who could be introduced.
Facundo Bernal, Rodrigo Zalazar, Facundo Pellistri and Federico Vinas are also competing for starting places.
A Tough Test for India
India will need to produce a disciplined defensive performance if they are to contain Uruguay's attacking talent. The Blue Tigers' recent record at the back will be a concern, particularly against a team capable of creating opportunities from open play.
For Uruguay, the priority will be to maintain the momentum generated by their victory over South Korea and continue improving under Forlan.
For India, however, the result may be less important than the opportunity to gain experience against elite international opposition. With the SAFF Championship approaching, a strong performance against Uruguay could provide valuable confidence to Jamil and his squad.
The Blue Tigers will therefore hope to remain competitive, create opportunities on the counter-attack and avoid the defensive mistakes that have contributed to their recent struggles.
