Malappuram FC and Calicut FC Share the Spoils in a Thrilling Malabar Derby

Manjeri, Kerala:
The highly anticipated Malabar Derby, often dubbed the ‘El Clásico’ of the Super League Kerala, delivered on all its promise as Malappuram FC and Calicut FC played out a pulsating 3–3 draw at the Payyanad Stadium in Manjeri on a rain-soaked evening in Round 3 of the competition.

With the result, Malappuram FC climbed to second place in the Super League Kerala table, while Calicut FC continued to show why they are among the league’s most entertaining sides.

Calicut drew first blood early in the game when Ajsal opened the scoring in just the sixth minute. A well-delivered corner by Boasso caused chaos in the Malappuram box, and after a poor clearance by the goalkeeper, Manoj flicked the ball into Ajsal’s path. The striker wasted no time in blasting the ball into the roof of the net, handing the visitors an early lead.

Malappuram responded with several attacking moves but were repeatedly denied by Calicut’s resilient backline. Just before half-time, however, they found their breakthrough. Facundo curled in a perfect corner to the near post, where captain Aitor timed his run brilliantly to flick the ball home, making it 1–1 at the break.

The second half began with the same intensity. Calicut once again went ahead when their captain Prashant met Salim’s precise cross from the left with a powerful header. The persistent rain made the pitch slippery and disrupted play, yet both teams continued to push for more goals.

In the 71st minute, Ajsal struck again, capitalising on defensive confusion to extend Calicut’s lead to 3–1, silencing the home fans. However, the drama was far from over.

Malappuram showed immense character and refused to give up. In the 85th minute, Nithin Madhu’s long-range strike slipped past the Calicut goalkeeper, aided by the rain and a slick surface, giving the hosts a lifeline. Moments later, Roy Krishna was brought down inside the box, earning Malappuram a penalty.

Although Krishna’s initial shot was saved, the wet pitch caused the rebound to stay in play, allowing John Kennedy to slot home the equaliser in the 89th minute, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters.

The game ended 3–3, with both sides sharing the spoils in what will surely go down as one of the most memorable fixtures of the season.

Final Score: Malappuram FC 3–3 Calicut FC
Goals:

  • Calicut FC: Ajsal (6’, 71’), Prashant (53’)

  • Malappuram FC: Aitor (45’), Nithin Madhu (85’), John Kennedy (89’)
