Alarm bells briefly rang for Chelsea supporters at Turf Moor on Saturday when injury-prone captain Reece James was withdrawn at half-time. However, Enzo Maresca later clarified that the substitution was pre-planned, rather than triggered by a fresh setback.
There was also no appearance for Wesley Fofana, who was left out of the matchday squad purely for “protection”. The French centre-back should therefore be in contention to face the Spanish champions, but Tosin Adarabioyo has made a strong case for a starting berth after a stellar performance at the weekend.
Chelsea’s absentee list remains lengthy: Romeo Lavia (thigh), Cole Palmer (groin/toe), Dário Essugo (thigh) and Levi Colwill (knee) are all still sidelined. Mykhaylo Mudryk is also unavailable, having now missed almost a full year due to his doping suspension.
On the Barcelona side, Alejandro Balde was also substituted at the break on Saturday after a knock to the head, but there are currently no serious doubts over his availability for Tuesday’s contest.
Marcus Rashford’s return to England is uncertain due to illness, although Raphinha made his comeback from a hamstring issue off the bench against Athletic. After his match-winning brace, Ferran Torres has surely done enough to retain his spot in the XI.
Frenkie de Jong is eligible again after serving a domestic suspension, but Pedri (hamstring), Gavi (knee) and Marc-André ter Stegen (back) remain unavailable for the visitors.
