Already battling a decimated defence, Alonso’s backline crisis deepened against Celta Vigo as Éder Militão limped off with a first-half hamstring injury, one that will certainly rule him out of Wednesday’s fixture.
Fellow defenders Dani Carvajal (knee), Trent Alexander-Arnold (thigh) and Ferland Mendy (hamstring) join Militão in the treatment room, while Dean Huijsen and David Alaba are not expected to recover from their muscle issues in time. Eduardo Camavinga (ankle) is also a fresh absentee.
As a result, Alonso is down to the bare bones at the back, although he need not worry about suspensions, with Álvaro Carreras and Fran García — both sent off at the weekend — serving their bans in La Liga rather than in Europe.
Further forward, Kylian Mbappé has already reached a career-best nine goals in a single Champions League campaign, but a reported leg problem puts his involvement in doubt as well.
In contrast, Man City boast a near fully-fit defensive unit, though John Stones was a surprise omission from the win over Sunderland due to an unspecified issue, one Guardiola declined to elaborate on after full time.
Stones’s availability will remain uncertain until Guardiola’s pre-match press conference, but the visitors will definitely be without midfield pair Mateo Kovačić (ankle) and Rodri (thigh) for the trip to the Spanish capital.
Rayan Cherki, fresh from providing two assists on Saturday — including a sublime rabona cross for Phil Foden’s header — has done everything possible to stake a claim for his first Champions League start for City this week.
