Heavily linked with Manchester United over the summer, Aston Villa’s number one Emiliano Martínez has missed the Lions’ last two matches due to a back injury, but the Argentine is feeling “much better” and could yet be in contention to return here.
However, Pau Torres (calf), Tyrone Mings (thigh) and Ross Barkley (knee) all remain sidelined, while Harvey Elliott has been battling illness and Jadon Sancho is ineligible to face his parent club. Emery would not have been expected to start either of the latter two even if they were available, and he is set to once again rely on former Manchester United defender Victor Lindelöf to cover for Torres at the back.
Turning to the visitors, neither Matthijs de Ligt (back) nor Harry Maguire (thigh) are ready to return, while Noussair Mazraoui has departed for AFCON alongside Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo. The absences of Diallo and Mazraoui should open the door for Patrick Dorgu to come back into the side, with Diogo Dalot expected to switch across to right wing-back.
Further forward, Benjamin Šeško — recently back from a knee issue — is likely to deputise for Mbeumo in attack. Ruben Amorim must also address Casemiro’s suspension after the Brazilian picked up too many yellow cards, meaning Kobbie Mainoo could finally be handed his first Premier League start of the season, unless the manager opts for a surprise inclusion of Manuel Ugarte.
