Villarreal will be without a host of players for Sunday’s contest, with Willy Kambwala (hamstring), Logan Costa (knee), Pau Cabanes (knee), Ramon Terrats (hamstring), Thomas Partey (muscle), Gerard Moreno (muscle), Santiago Mourino (muscle), Pape Gueye (AFCON) and Ilias Akhomach (AFCON) all ruled out.
There is, however, optimism that experienced midfielder Dani Parejo can shake off a minor injury in time to feature from the start this weekend. Given the lengthy list of absentees, surprises in the home side’s XI appear unlikely, with Ayoze Pérez expected to partner Georges Mikautadze in attack, while Tajon Buchanan should occupy a wide role.
Barcelona, meanwhile, will be without Pedri, as the midfielder missed training on Friday due to a calf strain. His absence could see Eric García and Frenkie de Jong form the central midfield pairing against the Yellow Submarine.
Gavi (knee), Ronald Araújo (personal reasons) and Dani Olmo (shoulder) also remain unavailable, leaving Hansi Flick with key decisions to make in the final third. Marcus Rashford and Robert Lewandowski are both candidates to drop to the bench, with Fermín López potentially operating in the number-10 role, while Ferran Torres is expected to earn a start in attack.
