Match Preview

Barcelona have already lifted the Spanish Super Cup this season and remain firmly on course to compete for multiple honours as the campaign enters its decisive phase. Their place in the Copa del Rey semi-finals was confirmed on Tuesday night thanks to a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Albacete.

Hansi Flick’s men are also through to the Champions League round of 16 and currently sit at the summit of the La Liga standings. They hold a slender one-point advantage over second-placed Real Madrid, who do not play until Sunday when they face Valencia. That gap means Barcelona have the chance to extend their lead, at least temporarily, with another positive result this weekend.

The Catalan outfit come into Saturday’s clash in strong domestic form, having secured back-to-back league wins against Real Oviedo and Elche. A further victory would move them four points clear at the top, increasing the pressure on their title rivals as the race intensifies.

Recent history also heavily favours the league leaders. Barcelona are currently on a four-match winning streak against Mallorca, including a comfortable 3–0 triumph in the reverse fixture earlier this season. In fact, the Blaugrana have not suffered defeat to the island club since May 2009. Their dominance is even more pronounced on home soil, where they have remained unbeaten in this fixture since May 2008 — a run spanning well over a decade.

Given that record, anything other than a Barcelona win would be considered a major surprise.

Mallorca, meanwhile, have endured an inconsistent campaign. With 24 points collected from 22 matches, they sit 14th in the table — only two points clear of the relegation zone. The battle for survival remains tight, leaving little margin for error in the months ahead.

That said, Jagoba Arrasate’s side travel to Catalonia in relatively positive spirits. They produced one of their standout performances of the season last time out, thrashing Sevilla 4–1. That result means they have now won two of their last three league fixtures, having also beaten Athletic Bilbao in mid-January.

Interestingly, Mallorca’s home form has been a key strength. They boast the eighth-best home record in La Liga, but their struggles on the road tell a very different story. The Pirates have managed just one away win all season, picking up only five points from 11 matches — a statistic that underlines why they remain in the lower half of the table.

Improving their away performances will be crucial if they are to steer clear of relegation trouble. Following this difficult trip to Barcelona, they face two more challenging fixtures — hosting Real Betis before travelling to Celta Vigo later in the month.

Mallorca will at least benefit from being the fresher of the two sides, having had a full week to prepare since their win over Sevilla. However, the scale of the challenge awaiting them at the league leaders’ home ground cannot be overstated.

Team News

Barcelona continue to deal with several injury concerns. Gavi and Andreas Christensen remain sidelined with knee problems, while Pedri is unavailable due to a hamstring issue. Raphinha is also nursing a groin complaint, making his involvement unlikely.

With one eye on fixture congestion, Hansi Flick is expected to rotate from the side that started the Copa del Rey win over Albacete. There is a strong possibility he will revert to the midfield trio used in the recent league victory over Elche, with Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez partnering Frenkie de Jong in the centre of the park.

Should that be the case, Eric Garcia may slot into central defence. In attack, Raphinha’s absence could open the door for Marcus Rashford to feature, with Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres completing the forward line.

Mallorca’s squad is in far better shape fitness-wise. Marash Kumbulla is their only injury concern after missing the last two matches, but the defender remains just a doubt rather than a confirmed absentee.

Given the emphatic nature of their victory over Sevilla, Arrasate may opt to name an unchanged starting XI. Vedat Muriqi — who has scored 15 league goals this season — is expected to spearhead the attack once again.

Former Barcelona forward Jan Virgili is also poised to start. However, there could be one adjustment out wide, where Antonio Sanchez is pushing to replace Takuma Asano on the flank.
