Tottenham Hotspur possible starting lineup:
Vicario; Spence, Romero, Van de Ven, Udogie; Bissouma, Gallagher; Odobert, Simons, Kolo Muani; Solanke

It is fair to suggest that Manchester United have enjoyed a significant upturn in fortunes following the departure of Ruben Amorim and the appointment of Michael Carrick. The Red Devils have taken maximum points from their three Premier League matches under their new manager, extending their unbeaten run in the competition to seven games, recording four wins and three draws in that period.

United’s resurgence has been underlined by eye-catching victories against the league’s top two sides, Arsenal and Manchester City. They followed those results with a dramatic 3–2 triumph over Fulham at Old Trafford last weekend. Benjamin Sesko proved to be the hero on that occasion, scoring a stoppage-time winner in the 94th minute to seal all three points after a tense late comeback from the visitors.

Interestingly, United’s success this season has often come when they have been forced to play without dominating possession. They remain unbeaten in all nine Premier League matches in which they have had less of the ball than their opponents, winning seven and drawing two. Even more notably, they have won every match in which their possession has dropped below 45%. By contrast, their record when controlling more than half of possession is far less convincing, with just four wins from 15 such games, alongside six draws and five defeats.

Confidence is understandably high at Old Trafford, with Carrick’s revitalised squad now sitting fourth in the Premier League standings. They hold a narrow one-point advantage over fifth-placed Chelsea and are two points clear of Liverpool in sixth. Victory this weekend would see United move beyond last season’s final points tally of 42 with as many as 13 fixtures still remaining.

Another win would also mark their fourth consecutive league victory — something they have not achieved since February 2024 during Erik ten Hag’s tenure. However, recent meetings with Tottenham Hotspur suggest this will be far from straightforward. United have failed to win any of their last six Premier League encounters with Spurs, drawing three and losing three — matching their longest winless league run against the North London club.

Tottenham’s home form has been a major concern this season. Only Wolverhampton Wanderers have collected fewer points on their own ground than Spurs, who have managed just 10 so far. They looked set for another disappointing result last weekend after a difficult first half against Manchester City in a subdued atmosphere in North London.

However, Spurs showed resilience after the break. Dominic Solanke struck twice — including a fortunate scorpion-style finish — to earn his side a 2–2 draw after City eased off in the second period.

Despite that comeback, Tottenham are now without a win in their last six Premier League matches, drawing four and losing two — their longest such run since the closing stretch of last season. They currently sit 14th in the table, nine points clear of the relegation zone but still 11 adrift of the top five.

Interestingly, Spurs have performed far better away from home. Five of their seven league victories this campaign have come on the road, and only Arsenal and Aston Villa have accumulated more away points than Tottenham’s 19.

The North London side also boast a strong recent record against Manchester United in all competitions. They are unbeaten in their last eight meetings, winning five and drawing three. Only Chelsea have previously enjoyed a longer undefeated streak against the Red Devils in the Premier League era. Spurs also secured an emphatic 3–0 victory at Old Trafford last season and could now record consecutive away league wins at United for only the second time in their history.

Team News

Manchester United will be without Patrick Dorgu and Matthijs de Ligt, who remain sidelined with thigh and back injuries respectively. Mason Mount is also unavailable after sustaining a knock in training.

Carrick is unlikely to make major alterations to a winning lineup, though Benjamin Sesko’s match-winning cameo last time out could earn him a recall in attack. If he is restored to the starting XI, one of Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo or Matheus Cunha may drop to the bench.

Captain Bruno Fernandes continues to be United’s chief creative force. His 12 Premier League assists this season are the highest in the division and match his best return in a single campaign, equalling his 2020–21 tally. He is expected to operate once again in an advanced playmaking role behind the striker.

Tottenham’s injury list remains lengthy. James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski are both sidelined with knee issues, while Mohammed Kudus is dealing with a thigh problem. Pedro Porro, Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur are nursing hamstring injuries, and Ben Davies and Lucas Bergvall are out with ankle complaints. Kevin Danso is also unavailable due to a toe injury.

There are, however, some potential boosts for Spurs. Dominic Solanke and Cristian Romero — who both failed to complete the full match against Manchester City — are expected to be fit. Micky van de Ven, absent for the last two games with a minor issue, is also available, while Djed Spence faces a late fitness test.

Solanke, in particular, has enjoyed facing Manchester United, scoring five goals in his last five appearances against them in all competitions, and he is set to lead the line once again. Wilson Odobert and Mathys Tel are pushing for starting roles in attack and could feature alongside — or instead of — Randal Kolo Muani and Xavi Simons.
