France vs Northern Ireland: Match Preview
France begin their World Cup campaign as one of the tournament favourites after an impressive qualifying campaign that saw them top European Qualifying Group D with five wins and one draw. The two-time world champions arrive in North America ranked No. 1 in the FIFA World Rankings and are widely expected to challenge for the title once again.
Manager Didier Deschamps has assembled a squad packed with world-class talent, particularly in attack, as Les Bleus look to make amends for their heartbreaking defeat to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final. France head into their opening fixture against Northern Ireland in strong form, having won eight of their last 10 matches in all competitions. Their only defeat during that period came against Ivory Coast on Thursday, a match in which Deschamps opted to rotate heavily.
Historically, France have enjoyed success against Northern Ireland, winning all three previous meetings between the two nations before the turn of the century. During those encounters, Les Bleus scored nine goals while conceding just once.
Northern Ireland, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on qualification for their first World Cup since 1986. After collecting nine points from six matches in European Qualifying Group A, Michael O’Neill’s side reached the playoff stage but suffered a 2-0 defeat to Italy, ending their hopes of reaching the finals.
Despite that disappointment, there are encouraging signs for the Green and White Army. Northern Ireland continue to develop a promising young squad and fielded a starting XI with an average age of just 22.1 during Thursday’s victory over Guinea. Their recent promotion from UEFA Nations League C in November 2024 further highlights the progress being made under O’Neill.
With challenging fixtures against Hungary, Ukraine and Georgia scheduled for September, Northern Ireland will view this encounter as an opportunity to test themselves against one of the strongest teams in world football.

Team News
France could rotate their lineup after several key players were involved in last weekend’s UEFA Champions League final. William Saliba and five Paris Saint-Germain players may be rested from the start, giving opportunities to players such as Ibrahima Konaté, Maghnes Akliouche and Marcus Thuram to impress ahead of the tournament.
Northern Ireland are expected to make minimal changes following encouraging performances against Wales and Guinea. However, Blackburn defender Tom Atcheson will miss the match after receiving a straight red card on Thursday. As a result, Trai Hume is expected to come into the starting lineup.
Prediction
France possess significantly greater depth, quality and experience than their opponents and should have little trouble controlling proceedings. While Northern Ireland’s youthful squad has shown promise, overcoming one of the tournament favourites would represent a major upset.
