Germany vs Serbia – UEFA Nations League Match Preview

Germany will be looking to recover from a disappointing start to their Nations League campaign when they face Serbia in their next League A, Group 2 fixture.

Jurgen Klopp’s first match in charge ended in a 1-1 draw away against the Netherlands. Although conceding a late equaliser was frustrating, Germany could take some positives from the result. However, their following match brought a more disappointing outcome as they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Greece, with Dimitris Kourbelis scoring the decisive goal in the 74th minute.

The results have left Germany without a win in four matches since their final World Cup group-stage fixture against Ecuador. They have also conceded in seven consecutive games, highlighting an area that will need attention.

Germany were initially expected to challenge for top spot in League A, Group 2, but they currently sit third. They are three points behind the Netherlands and two further points behind Greece, meaning another dropped result would make their position increasingly difficult.

With the Netherlands and Greece also due to meet, Germany have an opportunity to close the gap if they can collect maximum points against Serbia.

Germany vs Serbia Head-to-Head

Germany could face a competitive test against Serbia, with the previous three meetings between the nations producing one victory each and one draw.

Serbia will therefore arrive knowing they have been able to make life difficult for Germany in recent encounters, despite their difficult run of form in the current Nations League campaign.

Germany Looking for a Response

Klopp has used this international break to assess a large group of players, naming two separate squads containing a combined 44 players.

The upcoming fixture provides another opportunity for players to make an impression and strengthen Germany’s squad options.

The hosts will be determined to improve their defensive record and return to winning ways after their defeat to Greece. A victory would also keep their hopes of competing near the top of the group alive.

Serbia's Difficult Start

Serbia are also entering the match under pressure. The visitors are adapting to life under new head coach Veljko Paunovic, who took over from Dragan Stojkovic in October 2025.

Paunovic is approaching his 10th match in charge, but consistency has been difficult to find. Serbia's latest 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands was their sixth loss in eight matches.

The result also extended their losing streak to four games, their longest run of defeats in more than two decades, leaving them at the bottom of League A, Group 2.

Both of Serbia's Nations League defeats have been by a single goal, although their defensive performances have still presented concerns. They conceded eight big chances across their opening two matches, including four during the second half against the Netherlands.

Another problem has been their slow starts. Serbia have conceded the opening goal in eight of their last 10 matches and have been behind at half-time in seven of their last eight games.

They will need a much stronger opening against Germany if they are to take anything away from Munich.

Team News

Germany will be without Arsenal forward Kai Havertz, who has withdrawn from international duty after suffering an injury during the opening Nations League match. He was unlikely to feature in this fixture regardless.

With Klopp expected to make changes to his lineup, Malick Thiaw and Waldemar Anton could be considered for roles in central defence. David Raum and Ridle Baku are also candidates to operate in the full-back positions.

Tom Bischof, who recently represented Germany Under-21s against Latvia, is another player in contention for involvement with the senior team.

For Serbia, Dusan Tadic made his record-extending 113th international appearance in the defeat against the Netherlands. He is now seven caps ahead of Aleksandar Mitrovic at the top of Serbia's all-time appearance list.

Mitrovic is absent from the current squad, increasing the attacking responsibility on Luka Jovic. The striker scored against the Netherlands and has also found the net in Serbia's previous meeting with Germany.

Jovic's record against Germany makes him one of Serbia's players to watch in this fixture.
